Ueshiba studied various forms of jujitsu, judo and kendo. He studied and then taught daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu. The pre war style has a greater emphasis on atemi (strikes) and a more linear approach than would be found in later forms of aikido.
Later, as he grew older and more spiritual he placed a greater emphasis on kokyu-nage (breath throws) which are soft and blending, utilising the opponent's movement in order to throw them.
Fundamental techniques presented by Koichi Tohei Sensei 10th Dan.
The modern style of aikido still employs the traditional principles.
